Did you recently start wearing dentures? Are you trying to figure out a good way to care for them? Today, dentures could be created by using synthetic materials like plastic, porcelain or by combining the two. How you care for your dentures can greatly impact their lifespan.

Even though dentures were designed to look like natural teeth, caring for them can be similar and different in some respects.

Similarities
-Dentures need to be brushed and cleaned daily to get rid of plaque and to help you avoid stains.
-You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush on them, although there is a denture toothbrush you could also use.
Hard-bristled brushes can scratch dentures, which is similar to how they can wear off a tooth’s enamel.

Differences
-Dentures can be damaged, cracked or fractured if they are accidentally dropped. Our dentists recommend that you stand over a folded towel or a sink of water while cleaning them to help prevent this.
-They need to be kept moist when not in use. If your dentures dry out, they could lose their shape. We may recommend a soaking solution to you, or you could keep them in a glass of water.
-Many toothpastes are too harsh to use on a denture.
