Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool to help detect damage and disease not visible during a regular dental exam. Your age, oral health, and any surface level signs of disease or decay will determine how often you need to have X-rays. Children often require more X-rays than adults due to their rapidly changing jaw structure and increased risk for cavities. New patients require X-rays to identify their current oral health and have a comparison for future visits. Dr. Morgan and our team may also take X-rays if you are receiving or considering treatment so that we have a clear image of your dental structure and oral needs.
Dental X-ray exams are safe, and the tools and techniques used follow the ALARA principles (As Low As Reasonable Achievable) to limit the body’s exposure to radiation. A leaded apron minimizes exposure to the abdomen, and a leaded thyroid collar is used to protect the thyroid. Be sure to inform your dentist if you are pregnant, as special care may be necessary.
